Kantanka Car Engine

We can testify that technology has spurs over the centuries. New inventions has brought about economic growth and development in most countries and Ghana has not been left out thanks to the visionary Dr.Osafo Kantanka who has found ways to maufacture cars, engines, helicopters, amour cars among others.

One of his inventions that caught my attention was how he manufactured his car engines. It's  likely to know that car engines are made from certain special metals and chemicals but for Kantanka he found a different way to maufacture his engine using  shells, Palm ,sand among others.

Kantanka with his knowledge firstly used a multi pin pattern which is an engine block which has been divided into six patterns in making the engine. The pattern makers use chisel and hammer in crafting the moulded engine. The engine is then transformed to metal. Before the stick mould is made metal ,the patterns are put in a special sand which can stand a temperature of 2000 degree Celsius. And it should be noted that it's not just any sand that is used. To make this work, Kantanka used a special sand which he tested with stick and fire that was able to stand heat and the test of time .the sand was named "notis3a". When he realized that the "notis3a" could stand heat he added three more different sand which he got a moulding clay soil out of that has been named "ya  bore na y3nsa aka". This sand is putted in a moulding box along side the pattern which is pounded until hard. When this happens the pattern is taken out to reveal the design.

After the mould is created you make sure to add your runner. A runner is a passage where you allow your molten which has been melted in the mould. A molten is metals that has been melted into liquid. The molten goes through a passage to the runner. The mould has tiny holes in them, the holes serves as a passage way for air so  When the melted metals are poured inside they show a reaction of gases passing through the holes. so it's very necessary to create holes in the moulds to allow the flow of gases else if other wise then you end up having a casting defect. The casting defect are blow holes, gas holes, screen cage and not heard. So if you want to be free from casting defect you need to give it risers which will give way to air and gases.

There are different times of mouldings. They are; green moulds, skin dry moulds, and dry mould. The green mould is a type of mould  that has been made today  along with it casting the same day. The dry skin mould is when you dry the surface of the mould  Before casting while the dry mould is when you wait for a week or two before casting.

After you done with the mould along with the runner and riser you then select materials for your melting.  Metals like aluminium, magnesium, brass, nickel, silicon, cast iron, and alloy are mixed together and poured in a pot which is called crucible pot. The pot is then placed on the furnace and a blower is connected by the help of electricity and diesel where melting takes place. The metal is melted to the point of liquid which is the poured in the mould to allow to dry . After the casting you need to wait before you break away the sand.

The cast is taken to the machinery that makes the last section of fundery. They do the cleaning and polishing .

We can testify that engine blocks can not be solid because if engine blocks are solid then where will your timing chain be ,or your flying  wheel or your clamp chain or even water gallery that is why Kantanka saw that apart from the pattern from the moulding he found a way to create holes in them by using a different sand called fine soil. This fine soil is what he uses for his cores  so he added some binders to bind them to be able to create holes in the moulds where water comes from  through the engine .he used certain cords to create such holes called lining which is taken to the machinery where the lining and pisting.

One thing that makes Kantanka 's lining different from other lining is that he uses shells and nutmeg which is grinded together into powder where he uses a percentage of the powder with the cast iron and used it for the lining . It makes the lining strong making the construction and expandsion that takes place strong .

After everything the engine parts are sent to the mechanic to put everything  together to get a complete engine.
